As the 2025 Consent Agreement Negotiations hit the halfway mark, the Northern Territory Police Association (NTPA) is increasingly concerned that an agreement will not be reached by the 30 April 2025 deadline.

NTPA President Nathan Finn said he was frustrated over the Government’s failure to present a competitive offer thus far and said the Government is at risk of further destabilising the already overworked and undervalued NT Police Force.

“The Northern Territory Police Association refuses to be bound by the NT Government’s wages policy, which proposes a mere 3% pay increase – this is completely unacceptable,” said President Finn.

“To make matters worse, the Government wages policy includes a provision that there will be no backpay if an agreement isn’t reached within the negotiation timeframe. This ‘take it or leave it’ approach is short sighted.

“It is not just a negotiation—it’s a matter of attracting and retaining quality cops. The Government is attempting to force our members into accepting a deal that equates policing to just another public service role, disregarding the unique pressures, risks, and sacrifices made by our members every day.

“The workload of NT Police continues to grow at alarming rates as we are forced to pick up the responsibilities of other government agencies.”

President Finn said the NTPA will not roll over and accept an agreement that fails to deliver the wage package that our members deserve.

“Police jurisdictions across Australia have recognised the critical role of policing by offering substantial pay increases. Without competitive salaries, we will continue to haemorrhage experienced officers to those other jurisdictions.

"Whilst the community appreciates the hard work and sacrifice of police being on call, 24/7, to serve and protect, the Government clearly does not. If it did, the Government would immediately revise it wages policy and deliver a strong wages package that reflects the dedication and sacrifice of our hardworking police."
