The Northern Territory Police Association (NTPA) welcomes the independent inquiry into senior police recruitment within the Northern Territory Police Force (NTPF), announced by Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro.

The inquiry, led by The Hon. Alan Michael Blow AO, will examine recruitment processes for appointments to the ranks of Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Commander, and Superintendent since August 2023. This follows concerns raised by NTPA members regarding senior executive appointments within the NT Police Force.

NTPA President Nathan Finn emphasised the importance of the inquiry in restoring trust and transparency in the police promotional processes.

“We have some incredible senior police officers in the NT Police Force, and I acknowledge that this process may cause some frustration and angst for those members whose promotions are under review.

“But let me be clear—this inquiry is about ensuring fairness, accountability, and trust across all leadership and promotional processes. The NTPA is committed to building a stronger, more transparent police force while reassuring our members that promotions are based on a fair and equitable process.

“At its core, policing is about protecting and serving the community. To do this effectively, we must ensure that internal promotions are transparent, robust, and merit-based. The integrity of these processes must withstand scrutiny for the benefit of all our members.”

President Nathan Finn also acknowledged the support of Acting Commissioner Martin Dole for the inquiry.

“Acting Commissioner Martin Dole’s endorsement of this inquiry reinforces the importance of a fair, transparent, and accountable promotional process within the NT Police Force.

“The NTPA looks forward to the inquiry’s findings and remains committed to advocating for integrity, transparency, and fairness in all aspects of policing.

“To all our members, we are here to support you every step of the way. Keep up the great work you do in protecting the Northern Territory community.”
