The Northern Territory Police Association (NTPA) has welcomed the announcement of a $5,495 on the spot fine for the vile act of spitting or coughing on Territory workers, including police.

NTPA President, Paul McCue, said this is a direct result of successful lobbying by the Association for greater protection of our members, particularly in the current environment.

“We are pleased the NT Government has listened to our concerns and moved swiftly to implement an appropriate punishment for this disgusting and dangerous offence.

“I also thank the Opposition Leader and the Commissioner of Police for their support toward this outcome, which is not only good for our frontline workers, but all workers throughout the Territory.

“We’ve seen a disturbing number of people nationwide, including here in the NT, who have targeted police by spitting or coughing on them and claiming they are infected with COVID-19.

“Our officers are putting themselves on the frontline of this global health crisis, and being exposed to further risks while going about their duties is deplorable,” said Mr McCue
